(a reminder, in this section, you need to write your 250 word blog entry AND respond to two classmates)
Introduce yourself to the class. You might consider some of the following questions: where are you from? What is your major?
Why are you taking an online course?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite food?
What is the farthest you have traveled from home?
What did you do over Winter Break?
Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.
WEEKLY REQUIRED WORK
These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.
First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.
Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

Hello All. My name is Michelle Bese and I am a nursing major. I am almost 34 years old, married to an amazing man and a mother of two. I just recently had our second child which is why I chose to take this online course. Babies are hard and exhausting (but totally worth it) so the less I have to exhaust effort in going out in public the better (for now). I spent almost ten years in a specialized field called Polysomnography, which is taking care of patients with sleeping disorders, i.e. sleep apnea, night terrors, night seizures etc. Though the field was incredibly interesting and the money phenomenal, I wanted more. So I quit and age 31 and went back to school. I feel it is more important to love what you do than to just love your paycheck. I won’t ever make the money I made in Polysomnography, but I know I’ll be happier with my career.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is my weakest subject. I’m not sure why. I think it just bores me (no disrespect). I LOVE reading, but analyzing what I’ve read, or finding the hidden meaning behind the “blue curtains” is too much for me. I feel that takes away from the enjoyment of a good read.
My strongest areas and my passions lay in math and science. I could do math for hours and love every second of it. Despite my weakness in the subject, I still love helping others, so if at any time anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to help you.
Hi Michelle! First off, congratulations on your second child and please to meet you. It was interesting to read about your career of ten years. I am barely on the stepping stones of entering the career life and to be honest, I don't know what to expect. It's good to hear that you're finally doing something you truly love rather than just for the money, much respect. And I must agree, I love reading as well, but critical analyzing articles and writing research papers is not my cup of tea.
DeleteHi. It was really interesting to read your post because right now I am having trouble deciding what exactly I want to do in my life. It must have been a very difficult decision to quit your job and try to find something that you really love. I have been asking myself if I am taking the right path but I have not yet found something that really gets my attention. I like many subjects but I don't love any of them. It motivates me to know about people like you who decide to go for what they love instead of going for the money.
DeleteHi Michelle, I envy your fluency in math. I cannot do math. That's why I am a biology major :,,D Your background in sleep disorders interested me. Did you ever learn about certain sleep positions that trigger nightmares? Like sleeping on your back, side, etc.
DeleteHi Michelle! It made me feel so much better that I am not the only one that dislikes English. I enjoy the reading and analyzing but I dread the writing, because my grammar is horrible.
DeleteHello Michelle, Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! I enjoyed reading your blog. I think your extremely courageous for quitting a well paying job to pursue a career you love. What is the highest math you've taken?
DeleteHi Michelle! I am also a nursing major. I chose the major because I too believe that you should be happy with the career you pursue. I envy your love for math. I am not a good math person. But I share your love for science. Science is so much fun. And we take plenty of it as a nursing major. I enjoyed learning a bit about you and wish you the best of luck this quarter!
DeleteHello all..... my love for math isnt because it comes easy. Its a challenge but for some reason it relaxes me.
DeleteDelia, the highest math Ive taken is Statistics. Ive done some Cal, but on my own, not in class. Im hoping to get into a Cal class next quarter.
Sarah..... there are no particular sleep positions that cause nightmares... but drinking can. Alcohol can surpress your REM sleep so its usually the night after you consume alcohol because your brain will do into whats called a REM rebound and youre most likely to have nightmares at that point (Im not at all implying that you drink... Im just saying thats one reasons that is known to cause nightmares).
OH.... a positional connection to nightmares would be if you have a sleeping disorder thats called Sleep Apnea. Apnea is the cessation of breathing while you sleep and if that happens your brain is constantly waking itself up to make you take a breath. You wont recollect these awakenings because they are so bried. Ive seen patienst wake up literally HUNDREDS of times during an 8 hour night. Again, with these constant wakenings, your body will go into a REM rebound which can result in nightmares. The position that is the most sever for apnea is the back.
I love math and have always wanted to take a course higher than statistics. However, my major doesn't require it and wouldn't want to take unnecessary courses. Does your major require a lot of math?
DeleteHello everyone. My name is Frank Lee and I too am a nursing major. I am 21 years old and soon to be 22 in the next few days. I was born and raised in Bakersfield and have lived here ever since, sadly. The furthest I have ever traveled was to the Grand Canyons. Although the scenery was magnificent, driving for six plus hours can be very demanding and would require a lot of caffeine and restroom breaks. Currently, I live with my mother and have a younger brother who attends UCSD. I am not married nor do I have any kids but I look forward to the day of my first-born. I am in a relationship with my girlfriend, who is, also a nursing major. Funny how things turn out. My everyday interests lie in outdoor activities, such as exercising, playing sports, snowboarding and etc. I love being active and moving around, it helps keep me sane from the stress of the nursing program.
ReplyDeleteAs of now I am a second year in the nursing program and I am taking this course so that I can improve my reading and writing skills. Unlike most people, I lack heavily in English, especially when it comes to writing essays. And the nursing program requires a lot of reading and writing skills, just my luck.
I hope everyone the best this quarter and if there is any questions relating to the subject or nursing or just wanting to talk, I will do my best to help and respond as soon as possible.
First off, Happy Birthday Frank! Second, congrats on being in the nursing program! I hear its a tough road to get into (Im on that road, but doin it slowly so its not bad for me), and I hear its horribly grueling once you are in. I was very much looking forward to getting away from the "English" portion of school once in the program, but apparently from what you said, I wont be. Bummer. Guess I should take my pre-nursing progam time to become the best writer I can be by that time. Good luck!
DeleteThank you! It definitely is competitive going into the program. Although the program is hard, it definitely is doable. There are plenty of adults with children in the program and are surviving just fine or even better. I was in the same situation with you in the "English" portion, but surprise! Yes! Take it slow and see what else you can take to help familiarize yourself with nursing, but for you you seem to be a step ahead with your background in polysomnography.
DeleteHi Frank! I hope you had a good birthday!! I am also a nursing major and I connected with you when you said you use outdoor activity to relieve stress of the program. I do this same thing. I hunt with my dad and make sure that I am always outside. The outdoors is amazing. I am in pre-nuring and applying this year! It is stressful, but i cannot wait to jump in. I also lack a little in my writing and I'm hoping this class can make me better writer. Hopefully this class can give us both some tips. Good luck this quarter!
DeleteHello Frank,
DeleteWishing you a happy birthday! I think it is awesome how you and your girlfriend are both nursing majors because you guys can always help each other out. I see that you love playing sports. What are some of your favorite sports? I love playing sports too, especially volleyball and basketball. I have never been snowboarding before but i plan too sometime, it looks like a lot of fun! I love staying active as well and releasing all my stresses. My writing skills also need work too so it's nice to know that I am not the only one. I think this online course will be a great experience for everyone and we will learn a lot from it.
Hello Frank. I think it is great that you are in the Nursing Program. My wife's Aunt recently graduated from the Nursing Program, and it is my understanding that it is very difficult, so keep up the hard work! My mother in law is in very poor health, and subsequently, is in and out of the hospital frequently. It is always comforting when the nurses are kind, informative, and compassionate, rather than cold and disinterested, and I hope that you will be more like the former.
DeleteWhy happy birthday to you Frank. I must ask, as a potential nurse in the near future, how would you feel if something happened to one of your patients? Something devastating, like a death or an incident... Would you feel slightly at fault if they were in your care? I always wonder those "what if" type situations...
DeleteWoohoo Frank! I'm assuming you're a Capricorn like me! I will also be turning 21, but on January 18th! I tried to do nursing as well, but I realized it wasn't for me since I wanted to go into that career path for the wrong reasons and not to mention that knowing that some people's lives would be in my hands freaks me out. I mean, I'm too chicken to even hold a baby! I did take Anatomy though, and that sealed the deal for me. I think it's cool that you and your girl are both in nursing since that means you have someone to study with and motivate you! Just being in the nursing program and actually following through is totally awesome man and I sincerely wish you thee best.
DeleteHello. My name is Rodrigo Alvarez and I am an Spanish major. I was born in Guanajuato, Mexico and I have been living here in California for almost 6 years. I am taking this English online course because I need to improve my skills and also because this class counts as a requirement. My favorite book is "The Alchemist" of Paulo Coelho. I like to play sports, especially soccer, but this Winter break I didn't have the chance to practice sports because I am recovering from an injury. It has been almost 5 months since I got hurt but I am feeling better and I think I will be playing sports real soon.
ReplyDeleteHello Rodrigo! It was nice to read a bit about you. I hope your recovery is going well! I too am a big fan of sports and athletics. I was on my high school wrestling team until I injured my ankle and my doctor demanded I no longer wrestle. So I completely understand how you feel about not playing sports. Hope you're able to get back on the field soon!
DeleteThank you Jacob. The pain is gone, now I just have to get back at practicing sports little by little to prevent another injury. Injuries suck but they are part of any sport so we just have to overcome them. As long as we continue loving sports it does not matter if we are injured or not, they sports still enjoyable.
DeleteHello Rodrigo! It is very cool to read that you are from Guanajuato because by family is from there too. I love it there. The food, the history and the people. I am proud to say that I have visited all the places in the song Caminos de Guanajuato. Amazing place to be from!
DeleteHi Rodrigo! The Alchemist is my favorite book too! I love every single quote from that book.
DeleteI hope you have a full recovery and is able to go back to the field soon!
Hi Rodrigo! I know whats its like to want to play so bad but you have to recover. I played competitive soccer for 13 years! I had an injury that kept me out for half a season and I was dying to get back on the field. I hope your recovering is going good and your back playing soon!
DeleteHi Rodrigo! It was interesting to read about you. I hope you recover soon so that you may continue playing soccer.
DeleteHello All! My name is Jacob Williams and I am a Senior Psych major with a Criminal Justice minor graduating this Spring. I have lived in Kern County all of my life and in Bakersfield for nearly 12 years. I graduated from Ridgeview High School in 2010 and then immediately began my studies here at CSUB that same Fall. I recently got engaged and we are getting married this March! After graduating, I plan on pursuing my life long dream of becoming a Police Officer either here in Bakersfield or another agency in Southern California. I chose to take this online class because I needed extra units and thought it would be an fun class to take. I look forward to this quarter and hope that everyone has a great new year!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the engagement Jacob! March is a great month (mine and my husbands birthday month). It'll be beautiful for a wedding. My husband was an MP for the US Army and I have two brothers that are police officers. One in Northern Cali and one in L.A. Its a rough career and the academy is brutal, but if thats whats in your heart, then you'll do great at it. If you have any questions regarding the academy or being a cop in general, I can relay the questions to the ones I know and get back to you.
DeleteGood luck in everything Jacob
Hello, Jacob. Congratulations on your engagement! Do you want to specialize in any certain division once you're a police officer? I too, am a psych major. Do you recommend any classes or instructors?
DeleteHi Jacob! Congrats on your engagement. I also believe march is a great month (month of my birthday too). My dad is a fire fighter so I have been raised in the environment similar to a police officer. I believe that becoming a fireman or a police officer is very important. I believe both jobs are very interesting and exciting. I loved growing up with my father as a fire fighter. I wish you the best of luck in pursuing your goals!
DeleteCongratulations on the engagement Jacob. I feel that it is very admirable that you want to be a police officer, and that you have always known that is what you want to do. I wish you good luck!
DeleteFunny that we are in the same class! I can't wait to see you and Emma your beautiful fiance to get married. How come I never knew you wanted to be a Police Officer? Well we will have to talk much about that outside of class. See you around :)
DeleteThank you everyone for your kind wishes! I am beyond stoked for this coming year. :)
DeleteDelia: There aren't any profs that I wouldn't recommend. They all have their own unique teaching style, that for me, has worked well for their classes! Cognitive psych with Abramson is very interesting and Dr. Deegan is a fantastic person to get to know and have any class with. Also, I would recommend looking into Psi Chi and the Psych Club. :)
I am currently taking psych 203 with Dr. Sumaya. It seems really interesting thus far. Have you taken it? I would love to join but I do not live in bakersfield so it would be hard for me to attend the meetings. One of the many disadvantages of not living in town.
DeleteHello everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful break and holiday season, I know I did. I am from Bakersfield but most of my family lives in San Diego, which is where my parents are from. I would have much rather lived down south however, my parents both work for Chevron. I have one younger sister who I get along great with for the most part. As a family we are all very close and I am so thankful for the strong relationships that we all share. My biggest passion is to be outside and exploring. I have had the privilege to travel a lot of the world for my age. I have been anywhere from Hong Kong and Bali to many of the Caribbean islands. Each place has many things to see and do, whether it is on land or in the sea. I must say that currently my biggest passion in life is the ocean and that has driven me to be a scuba diver. Although, this past week I went mountain biking for the first time and I might have a new favorite sport. If you have not tried mountain biking I recommend it, it is a rush of a life time. This all said, school is my biggest priority and I am striving to end up in the health care field. I am a human biology major that is not quite sure the direction I want to take next. I will graduate this coming fall quarter and hopefully I will have the next step figured out before then, I am hoping in the next few months I will have a solid plan.
ReplyDeleteHello Kelly. Which other places have you visited? Lately I have been feeling the necessity to explore my surroundings but I have not made any trip to a significant place. Since you like to explore and be outside wouldn't be a good idea to do something related to biology and animals. That way you would be able to explore places while working.
DeleteHey Kelly! Remember me? So we have another class together huh? Congrats on graduating so soon. I have X amount of years left!! Still no idea where we are going to end up on the map. Once we get settled, I'll go after the nursing program there..... maybe.
DeleteBtw... if you dont remember me, I was in Micro with you, and pregnant :-P
Hello Kelly. Reading about your travels is so exciting. I've always dreamt of traveling to different places and experiencing new cultures. Where else have you traveled? Have you ever been to Africa? I am thinking about going for 45 days with the Give volunteer program.
DeleteYes I remember you! How have you been Michelle? Well yes graduating soon but I think we are in the same boat with X amount of years left. Hope you have been well. How is that little girl of yours?
DeleteHi Kelly! I am so amazed by the outdoor activities you are doing!
DeleteDid you enjoy Bali? I am a Balinese, but I was born and grew up in Jakarta. If you like beaches and diving, and plan to go back to visit Indonesia, Raja Ampat in Papua (east of Indonesia) is a beautiful place to go. I have never been there... I hope I can go there one day.
Delia and Rodrigo- I have been to Fiji, Turks and Caicos, Belieze, Honduras, Grand Cayman, St. Maarten, Maui, Bonair, Aruba, St. Lucia, also a few states and places in Mexico. My family takes about two dive trips every year. This year we are planning a long European trip. I have not been to Africa although on my bucket list is to do cadge diving off the southern tip. The volunteer trip to Africa should be a blast though! I can only imagine how enriching of an experience you would have.
DeleteAlthough animals could be a fun path to follow I am more passionate about people and feel as though I can make a larger difference in that area.
She is awesome. Nine months as of Monday. She is so spoiled! But if/when you see her youd know why. Shes so stinkin cute you cant help but spoil her.
DeleteIve been ok. School is super slow after shes been born and Im anxious to be done with it. I still have the desire to be a nurse.... but I MIGHT start exploring other options. Doubtful I'll change my career choice though.... nursing has been in my heart since I was 8. Im stuck in school for at least another 3 years.
Well I hope that I can meet her at some point! I'm sure that she is cuter than I can even imagine. I'm sure that you will eventually be a nurse! At the same time look back on the time with your daughter and know that even though things seemed to pass by so slow it was for the best!
DeleteWow Kelly... you've been to so many beautiful and exotics places.. !!! It makes me really want to go back to work so I can travel more.. :)
DeleteDid you share pictures of those places somewhere in a blog or flikr?
By the way, is your mother Lynn?
Hi Kelly!
DeleteI'm from San Diego and have family there also. What part of San Diego? I totally feel your pain and wish I was there instead of here as well!
Wow! I dream of traveling to half the places you have traveled to. You make me want to save, save, save to be able to visit all these exotic places.
DeleteHello everyone. My name is Adriana Ramirez and I am a psychology major. The reason I am taking this class on line is because I have a very hectic schedule and also because I have never taken an on-line course. I was born and raised here in California. My favorite kind of food are Mexican and Chinese food. I love going to Panda Express. I really don't have a favorite book, but when I was younger I was such a bookworm. I would literally finish a book in one day ( mind you I was around eleven) but once I hit high school; I decrease my reading. The farthest I traveled was to San Fransico but that was years ago. I need to traveled more often. My winter break was gone to soon, I didn't do what I wanted to do, which was work out.
ReplyDeleteHi Adriana!
DeleteOne of my reasons for taking this class was also because of my hectic schedule. I love Mexican and Chinese food as well. Do you have a favorite Mexican type of food? I love homemade enchiladas. When you said you were a bookworm when you were young it reminded me of my little 13 year old sister because she loves reading and I think that is awesome.
Do you have any New Years resolutions? I see that you would have liked to work out over break and didn't get the chance too. I actually work at the Student Recreational Center and personal training and fitness advising is offered with no additional charge of tuition. I don't know if you have worked out at the SRC but you should definitely check it out. It is a great place to work out the staff and guests are friendly.
Hi Diana!
DeleteI have a weakness for Mexican food, and the food I can not resist are tamales and posole. I love all kinds of Mexican food but those two are my top favorite. Yea I agree homemade enchiladas are the best. Yes my New Year's resoultions are to stick to a work out program, tone up for the summer, and improve my social skills. No I have never work out at the SRC. What kind of classes are available?
Hello everyone! My name is Arina Satiani. Actually I have a very long name, Made Ayu Arina Satiani, but to make it short, I go with Arina. I am from Indonesia. I moved to United States (Bakersfield) from Indonesia in 2006. My job with Chevron as Telecomm Engineer took me to this country. I am a full time soccer mom and a graduate student in CSUB MBA program now. I started working with Chevron in 1997 and retired in 2010 to be with my family. I have one thirteen year old son and my husband works in Aera Energy. After more than 15 years working as engineer, it is good to be a full time wife and mom for my family. It was a very tough situation when I had to make the decision to retire. But then I realized, my son needed me at home. We do not have any relative in the US and it is not our culture to send our son to a day care. After three years I stay at home and my son is older now, I start to miss my professional life. That is the reason why I am going back to school and pursue my master degree.
ReplyDeleteMy undergraduate is Electrical Engineering from Trisakti University – Indonesia. I started my MBA in Winter 2013 and I will be graduating this quarter. I am taking this course to fulfill the GWAR requirement for graduating from the MBA Program.
My favorite author is Paulo Coelho. I am truly a big fan of him. The Alchemist and Veronica Decides to Die are my favorite books. I love to read thriller novels too. James Patterson is my favorite author.
I am a very active traveler. My family love travelling. We have been to 30 states in the US. We are just coming back from Europe last week for our winter vacation. I got a job in Stuttgart-Germany after I got my engineering degree from Indonesia in 1995. That was the first time I traveled far from home. Indonesia might be the farthest I have traveled from home, because I consider Bakersfield as my home now.
Writing is my weakness. Since English is my second language, I feel that my vocabularies are so limited. That is my biggest challenge in writing. I look forward to learn more from this class.
Would you say traveling is dangerous? Or have I just watched too many movies based on tourists?
DeleteHi Sarah! It depends on the destinations you are going to. I always try to get information as much as I can about the destination before I go. I got pickpocketed once on my first trip abroad. I learnt from that experience that I had to gather as much as information about a place before I went there. Travelling with friends or family are better.
DeleteHello Sarah! I has been so interesting to read about your life! I too have been to Indonesia however, it was quite a few years ago. I think my favorite thing about my visit was riding the elephants and seeing the sacred cows. Also to walk through all the open air markets was like nothing I had ever done before. It was so exciting to see the different culture of the people.
DeleteDear Arina and Kelly,
DeleteI just googled "pickpocket," and I hope you received good karma from that (Arina).
I hope to visit Indonesia someday! Would you say cows have a better living environment in the U.S. or in Indonesia (Kelly)?
Sarah,
DeleteI am a Balinese... Bali is a small island in Indonesia...majority of Balinese are Hindu. For Hindu, cow is a holy animal, because it helps people to make their living. Hindu people do not eat beef for that reason. They are treating cows well. But in majority part of Indonesia, cows help people to turn over the soil in the rice fields. Most of the people do not have enough money to have tractors to do that work
Hi guys!
ReplyDeleteSo, I am taking the GWAR course instead of facing the GWAR exam because the time limit for the GWAR exam intimidates me. I am interested in human health. I chose to be a human biology major because the knowledge attained could be applied to helping me live to 100. I graduate fall 2014. I’ve been practicing a vegetarian diet since high school. I failed an English course in 2011. I was born in Denver and lived in 5 states when my dad was in the army.
I went to San Diego this winter break, so my Christmas was a solid 82-degree Christmas. I’m rewarding myself with a snowboarding trip this weekend (hopefully) due to the lack of activities this break. This will be my first time snowboarding.
I used to read as a child, but I started targeting my spare time to shopping. This course will be a nice way to get back on track and have an excuse to read. I started one of the novels…If anyone has started The Tortilla Curtain, is immigration still like that to this day?
My current short-term goal is to learn a little kinesiology, so I can work out properly without shedding a bunch of pounds. I used to think as long as I drank protein before a workout, all would be fine, but now I know there’s more to it. A person can hurt themselves if they overwork their muscles. It disappoints me that I’ve had no field trips in any of my CSUB courses. BC was pro-fieldtrips, but that’s just something I’m going to have to get over.
-My name is Sarah-
Hi Sarah!
DeleteI LOVE San Diego! I'm so jealous that you got to spend Christmas there! The weather is always perfect! I connected with you on the being intimidated about the GWAR time limit! I hate timed test. They make me rush and second guess everything I am writing. I also agree with you on the field trip thing. Why don't we have field trips at CSUB? It was nice reading about you and connecting with some of the topics you mentioned. Best of luck this quarter for reaching your goals.
Hi Miranda :) Yes!! Exactly. I'm assuming the GWAR exam is an hour-2hours max. That's not enough time to dig into my thesaurus for some clever words. Hopefully this quarter is peaceful. What are you majoring in?
DeleteSarah, I have the same reason with you why I didn't take GWAR exam. I need to read more to be able to write. And 2-hour test is just intimidating.
DeleteCSUB Business School has a couple field trip every year. One of them is the finance trip to New York.. I missed the registration last year, It was full already. This trip is coordinated by one of Finance's professor Business School also had a trip to Chile, Dec 2012, I didn't know why they didn't have it again this year and last year. From all those field trips, I see there is always the same professors who initiated the trips, and became the department's initiative. Probably you can talk to one of your professors to suggest a field trip.
Sarah... Im majoring in Nursing! Currently in pre-nursing. Im hoping the same for the quarter, but its always a little hectic at times!
DeleteHello everyone! My name is Elizabeth Rodriguez. I'm currently a junior at CSUB and a Biology Pre-med major. I was born and raised in Bakersfield but I love visiting my family in Mexico. You can consider me someone who is very proud of her heritage. I am taking this online course because my work schedule is pretty hectic. To be honest I am very nervous about taking this class because my grammar is horrible and I am not the best writer. My favorite food is chinese and I love eating sweets! The farthest I have traveled from home has been to Guanajuato, Mexico where my family is from. This winter break I really did not travel anywhere but I got a new job, which I am very excited about. Considering its football season I would also like to say that I am a San Francisco fan and am rooting for them to make it to the Superbowl. GO NINERS!
ReplyDeleteHello Elizabeth! Kudos to you for studying such a topic! I was lucky enough to stay away from the, so called, hard sciences since I've been at CSUB. I did take Bio 100 which was pretty fun, but I guess it never really clicked with me. I know what you mean about the grammar thing, sometimes I get all caught up in trying to make sure that everything is correct and right, that I tend to mess myself up! Also, congrats on the Niners win this weekend, hopefully Tom Brady and my Patriots will see them in the Superbowl! :)
DeleteHello class!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Nandi Allen and I will be graduating this upcoming June with a B.A. in liberal studies. I plan to become a special education teacher for the elementary grades. I really love children and I look forward to having some of my own in the far future. I will be turning 22 on the 16th of this month! I have no plans but I'm still excited to celebrate another lovely year of life. I have two younger sisters and no brothers. I was raised in Lancaster, CA by my mommy and daddy. When I moved to Bakersfield back in 2010, it was my first time being away from home for an extended amount of time. It was rough at first but I've grown to really like Bakersfield. I am actually thinking about living here permanently. Cheerleading is my ultimate favorite sport but I also enjoy wrestling.
My everyday life is revolved around God, church, family, school, work and friends! I love being around people but my alone time with God is the absolute best! I also enjoy reading and crocheting in my spare time. My favorite book is called Emotional Purity by Heather Paulsen. It is a book about how to maintain healthy relationships with both the opposite and same sex and the importance of them.
I work in the Outreach department on our campus. I have been working here for about 2 years now. It's a great job! I am very grateful for it.
Hi, Nandi is really cool that you put God first, i admire that.
DeleteThanks!
DeleteHappy early birthday Nandi! I am also graduating in the spring with a B.A. in Liberal Studies, but I am leaning towards teaching lower grades, preferably K-3.
DeleteHi Camille! Thanks, I'm excited for my birthday. I still don't have any plans though. Do you plan to get your credentials from CSUB? And is there a specific reason that you are leaning towards teaching k-3?
DeleteHello class! My name is Delia Salas and I am twenty years old. I am a psychology major with a minor in criminal justice. I am still undecided on what exactly I want to do in the field of psychology, but I am hoping that I will figure it out soon. I am taking this course because it satisfies a requirement for graduation. I also commute to and from school and taking an online course would allow me avoid the fog. English is my weakest subject. I am very unconfident when it comes to writing papers, I lack grammar skills; I honestly sit in front of the computer with Microsoft open for hours before I begin every paper. However, because I know English is not my strongest subject I always get my papers triple checked before I turn them in.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in the small town of Porterville, Ca. When I was applying to universities I choose the farthest ones from my hometown; I wanted to get away and experience the city life. Yet, when it came down to making my decision as to where I would go, I choose CSUB because I couldn’t imagine leaving the comfort of my own home. I was raised in a huge traditional Mexican family. My father has ten siblings, my mother has eight, and they all have children, which means more than fifty cousins (Can you imagine all the tamales we have to make for Christmas, a lot!). I have three older sisters and one younger brother. From a young age both my parents have instilled very strong values upon my siblings and I. They have made it a point to shape us in strong willed, humble, hardworking, loving individuals. They are indeed my biggest role models. My family and education are my main priorities.
Hi Delia! What exactly do you want to do after you graduate? I was interested in psychology at one point but then all of the research and papers involved pushed me away! I am also taking this course because it satisfies a graduation requirement. English was my favorite subject once upon a time ago but eventually it became math. I think the change came as I got older and had more experience with different types of math styles. It's really cool how you have a big family! I bet there is never a dull moment during family gatherings! I can only imagine what that's like! My family is actually the opposite. It's pretty small. My mom has one sister with 3 kids and my dad has one brother with 4 kids. And I have only two sisters! Family is a big part of my life as well though so I can totally relate to that!
DeleteHi Delia! When you talked about why you chose CSUB I could somewhat relate. I wanted to attend Berkley while I was still in high school, but being a first generation latina with the title of the "baby in the family," I decided to attend CSUB. At times I think I should've gone out of town to experience "living out on your own," but I then realize that I am comfortable here. I have my family, friends and job here. I also freak out at thinking about how I might be living off of Top Ramen to satisfy paying off rent and bills. I love food and I like eating at places like Enso's or the Noodle Bar but I don't think I'd be able to afford even long drive-thru rides to McDonald's or Checkers if I had gone out of town. I use that money for going out! lol By the way, it sounds like your house must be overflowing with food during the holidays which makes you really fortunate!
DeleteNadi - I don't know what exactly I want to do after I graduate. When I was younger I wanted to be a second grade teacher. However, after I worked for the migrant program I came to the realization that I didn't particularly enjoy teaching. I'm looking into school psychology, which still involves children but in a completely different setting. You can say that again, family gatherings are never dull to say the lease. Does your family gather often?
DeleteMonica - Sometimes I ponder my decision about staying close to home. But you're right, I would be living off "sopitas" due to bills, rent, tuition, etc. Like you, I am also a first generation Latina and was raised in a very traditional mexican home. My dad was adamant about me staying; thus the reason, for me commuting one hour everyday to school. I believe It was tradition for daughters to stay home with their parents until someone came and ask for their hands. Sadly, my dad is stuck in the "old ways". Is your dad the same way? I find that all friends who's parents are from a different country have the same customs. The benefit of having a big family is that there is a lot of extra hands to help make food. lol. Which is always great. Do you have a big family?
DeleteDelia- Oh okay! So with school psychology would that be considered like a school counselor? What about teaching do you not like? Yes my family has a bunch of gatherings but ever since I came to college, I've been missing out on a lot of them. So are you a part of any clubs or sports at our school?
DeleteThat's totally understandable! I love eating so Top Ramen would make me irritable! My dad is actually very care-free. He's traditional to some extent but I believe my mother is the one that's a bit more into tradition. She's the type that wants us to study and get a career and find someone that "will help us succeed," so I guess it's quite different from your family! I think they would want me to get married and all that though. My parents are...weird. lol. Ooh I bet! I don't cook though. Father told Mother that why have us cook when that was her job. I'm somewhat sheltered in that way. I'm a 20 year-old Mexican female that can't cook! I don't have a big family though. My father had a total of 9 kids, me being the youngest. He had other kids with previous women but with my mother it's just my 22 year-old sister and I.
DeleteNo, I would be a school psychologist but I could be a school counselor. I would have to get pps credential. I liked teaching but I didn't love it or have the patience a teacher needs. Tell me about it, since i've started school I don't have time to attend all of my family functions. No, I have not been able to join any clubs at school due to the fact that I commute. As soon as I finish class I head home. Are you apart of any clubs?
DeleteHello class! My name is Gabriela Lemus. I am currently an undergraduate student and a students in the credential program. I am extremely excited to complete my education. My overall goal is to become an elementary school teacher and preferably teach grades from 4th to 6th.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit nervous about this course because writing is a weakness of mine. I struggle expressing my thoughts through writing. Many times I have too many ideas and my writing becomes choppy and unorganized. I hope to improve my writing skills through this course.
I was born and raised in Porterville, Ca but every year my family and I travel to Mexico. I absolutely love it there. The life style is completely different, and life is tougher in Mexico but even then I am in love with the country. When I grow older and retire, I would love to spend half a year or so in Mexico.
That is a little bit about myself. There isnt much to me. Aside from traveling to Mexico I am full time student and employee. I wish you all the best of luck this quarter!
Gabriela, what would you say is best and worst attributes of Mexico? I personally would love to travel there one day, but I am so fearful of something bad happening.
DeleteHi Gabriela, what made you want to become an elementary school teacher? I have always liked working with children because you can really make a difference in a child's life with any help. I think all children should find some kind of joy in learning. I think I would like to teach 3rd and 4th grade.
DeleteHello Gabriela, I'm from porterville too. What a small world. Do you commute to school or did you move to bakersfield. I have gotten really good at making my schedule fit on two days so I only have to drive twice a week.
DeleteHello everyone! My name is Miranda Standridge and I am 20 years old (21 is 60 days!). I have a younger sister who I adore. I am very much a family person. I love to spend time with my family and boyfriend of five years. I am a avid hunter thanks to my dad and its my favorite hobby. I also love reading and have enjoyed reading the Tortilla Curtain. I don't have a favorite book. Anything that I read and enjoy is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI am a Nursing major, currently in pre-nursing, and a CAFS minor. My goal is to get into the nursing program this year. In the future I hope to become a pediatric nurse. Kids have always made me happy and I absolutely love working with them. I work at the Children's Center on campus, have for the past year, and LOVE it! I was born and raised in Bakersfield and I love this town. When I graduated high school, everyone wanted to get out of this town, and I didn't want to leave. This is why I chose Cal State. Somewhere close to home and my family.
Over winter break I went on vacation to Dumont. Dumont is a big open area of sand dunes. My boyfriend and I, along with his family and mine, own trailers full with quads and rzrs. This is another one of my favorite hobbies. There is no better feeling then riding a quad down a sand dune. If you haven't done it, try it!!
I haven't traveled very far, but I have been to Hawaii, Oregon, and Wyoming. All were amazing family trips with my boyfriend's family or my family. I went to Hawaii when I was about 10. I am going back summer of 2015. My family, grandparents, aunt and uncle, and cousins are going on a trip to Hawaii for my grandparents 50th anniversary! I cannot wait to experience Hawaii again!!
I am taking this course because I enjoy reading and this course gives me the excuse to sit down and read a book. I would also like to improve my writing and feel this course will help me. I am excited to see where this class takes me.
Hi Miranda, I think its cool that one of your favorite hobbies is hunting. What do you usually hunt for?
DeleteThanks! I usually hunt dove and duck mostly, but I'm hoping to get into some new stuff soon!
DeleteHI Miranda when do u plan on applying to the nursing program?
DeleteHello everyone, my name is Diana Fernandez. I am from Bakersfield California. I come from a family of seven. I have 2 older sisters, 1 younger brother and sister. My major is Physical Education and Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science. I would love to pursue a career in physical therapy or become a strength and conditioning coach for athletes. I am taking an online course because I am overloading this quarter and I figure it will help with my busy schedule. I plan on graduating from the university after this quarter. I enjoy reading textbooks regarding information on health and fitness. I prefer to study and read in quiet bright places, as well as read out loud. A favorite food of mine is Rustys pizza with pepperoni, pineapple, and peppers! One of my guilty pleasures that I enjoy too much to give up is eating Dutch Apple Pie. The furthest I have traveled from home was to Veracruz, Mexico to visit family from my mom’s side. Over winter break I spent a lot of my time with my boyfriend, family, relaxing, eating, and working out at the gym. I love playing sports, specifically volleyball and basketball. I also enjoy watching sports such as professional football, beach volleyball, and UFC. Misty May a professional beach volleyball player is one of my role models. She is a 3 time gold medalist and has been named one of the greatest beach volleyball players of all time. I like to bump music in the car and sing while I am driving, although I am not my any means a great singer.
ReplyDeleteIT was really interesting to know about your goals. At some point I also took interest in pursuing a career in physical therapy. I wanted to help athletes with injuries, but after seeing various injuries I realized I am not mentally strong to for this kind of job. As an athlete, it breaks my heart to see or even hear about someone having an injury. I also love volleyball. It was very disappointing to know that there are not volleyball leagues for men here, so I haven't played in a while, but I still love this sport. I have also hear of Misty May, but I have not seen her play. I'm sure she is awesome.
DeleteHi Diana, I think Exercise Science sounds pretty interesting. As an education major we have to take a class on how to teach PE. I'm not sure that's something that I am really prepared to do as am not the most coordinated person. I like that you included the bit about singing in the car. I tend to do that too.
DeleteMy name is Nile McKenna. I was born here in Bakersfield, grew up in Long Beach, and as often is the case, find myself back here in Bakersfield. I am a senior here at Cal State University Bakersfield, and this is my last quarter. I will be graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Management. In addition, I work nights for, (and I am the manager of), Designated Driver Incorporated, (DDI), which is a company that helps drunk people get themselves and their car home. I am married and the father of three daughters; Chyanne, Jocelyn, and Mallory. Chyanne is seven years old, Jocelyn is four years old, and Mallory is 4 months old. I am taking this class online in order to spend a little more time with them. I love to read, although it seems difficult to find the time to read for pleasure between school and work. Some of my favorite books are “Shogun” by James Clavell, “The Good Earth” by Pearl Buck, and “Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follett. I am also a fan of “A Song of Ice and Fire,” a series of fantasy novels written by George R.R. Martin that have recently become very popular with the release of the show “Game of Thrones” on HBO. I find it interesting that some of my favorite books are set in Asia, although I myself have never been farther east than Texas. Chinese food is also my favorite food, and Rice Bowl on Eighteenth Street is the best in town, in my opinion. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to reading about all of you as well.
ReplyDeleteI just have to say AWESOME for what it is you do!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!
DeleteHey Nile! I think that where you work is great! Some people really need that. Do you guys get a lot of calls everyday? Or do you receive them mainly on holidays and weekends? It is also super cool that you are taking this online class so that you can spend more time with your daughters. Fathers are so important and necessary in their children's lives, especially little girls. You get to be the first man your daughters love and you get to be the first man to tell them that they are beautiful. Maybe I'm weird but I think that is so wonderful. Good luck with your last quarter and best wishes to you and your family.
DeleteThank you so much for your kind words. In response to your question, we are open seven days a week, and we are relatively busy everyday, (although, we are much busier on weekends and holidays). We are open until 2 am Sunday-Thursday, and until 3 am Friday-Saturday. In case anyone ever needs our services, the number is 661-431-3854.
DeleteNo problem! Thanks for all of the information!
DeleteGood afternoon everyone, my name is Joe Garcia, although most call me Joey. I am 22 years old although I often times feel like I am pushing 40. I work a full time job from 8-6 and work in the lovely, breathtaking and astounding world of finance! Although my job can be stressful, it does give me the opportunity to keep busy. Originally, my major was English, however at this point in my life I would rather have just about any degree in hand. Currently my aspirations consist of a bachelors in public administration. Over winter break I did what every average citizen in the USA does: eat. Winter consists of large coats and even larger appetites and I was not going to discriminate against that policy. I work so much that I have very little time to do much, however I did go to Disneyland at the beginning of December. That was enjoyable and gave me a chance to breathe. I do travel quite a bit, but I must say that the farthest place I have been to would be Las Vegas. My travel expenditures have me up and down California mostly. Our state is lovely and most people do not take the time to stop and smell the poppies. Other then my small vacation to Disneyland, I pretty much stayed home and moped about. I do not live with my family because they live out in Delano, my hometown, which is roughly 30 minutes north from Bakersfield. Rather, I live with my significant other and our dog Emmett. He is quite the spoiled puppy, but he deserves it. Emmett was rescued from a no-kill animal shelter outside of town. I guess you could say I have a soft spot for animals. Eventually, the goal is to leave Bakersfield and find a different place to call home. With time all wishes are granted. Other then my dog, family and career, I do enjoy reading. I cannot begin to describe the types of literature I enjoy reading because there are so many different books out in the world. I will say that my favorite piece that I can read over and over again would be a short story called "The Crooked Man" by Charles Beaumont. That story is deemed a classic in my eyes and nothing short of ingenious writing.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to meet you Joey! How was Disney land at Christmas time, I have never gotten the chance to experience it? It is so nice to hear that you are a dog lover and rescuer! I have two dogs that I love very dearly.
DeleteHello Joey I'm Moria. Add the flu and our winter breaks sound similar with the exception of Disneyland. This was actually the first year we did not make the trek Anaheim for my daughters birthday and I am kind of relieved for it. As for the love of animals I have a miniature dachshund who believes he rules my home which is partly my fault but I couldn't imagine life without him. I also enjoy to read but I lean towards fanciful and somewhat cheesy romance novels. Glad to meet you on this blog. Good luck with this course.
DeleteHello everybody! My name is Monica Viviana Rivera. I'm a soon to be 21 year old lady and was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. I graduated from Highland High School in 2011 and began Cal State that incoming fall. I originally intended on pursuing the nursing program along with a minor in criminal justice. The original plan was to be a type of traveling nurse for those in the military. I shortly realized that I had only been interested in the fields for wrong reasons, that being the high demand and pay rates. I decided to switch my major into criminal justice and accompany it with a sociology major, but I am now debating on switching that into my major. I don't even know what I really want to do though, so I guess that means that I'm at a very awkward stage in my life. I know I want to help people and travel so I thought about considering Peace Corps or becoming a flight attendant. I guess we'll see though! For the meantime, I deciding to stick to criminal justice so that is why I am taking this online course, as part of the requirements. This is really different and new for me because this is the first online class I've taken. This even freaks me out a bit because I don't blog. I tried Tumblr but that did not turn out well. Luckily, this fall I used my time to think about possible career paths and to "vent" by going out of town quite often. The best part about my vacation was a 2 day trip to Disneyland that my friend treated me out to. Using his military I.D., he scored us 3 day park hoppers for a pretty gnarly price! I cannot wait to go again which should be anytime now!
ReplyDeleteHi Monica! My name's Arina. I've been in your situation when I was in your age ( I am 42 years old now)... got no idea what I wanted to do.. but then now, every time I looked back, I have learnt that choosing what you love to do (when you are still young), most likely would be the right decision. Because after you get married and have kids, there will be not so many options. :)
DeleteNice to meet you in this blog!
Hi Monica I'm Moria ,I can totally relate when you speak about changing majors and being unsure as to your future goals. I was the same way and have changed majors multiple times from nursing, liberal arts, general education to now sociology. Be patient as you have plenty of time to decide the rest of your life and what today brings may be completely different than tomorrow. Wish you the best of luck in this course.
DeleteHi Arina! That sure does make me feel better. I just think that maybe I'm doing things because others want me to. I guess I just feel pressured to know what I want already because I don't want to disappoint anyone or feel like I am wasting my time. Hopefully something comes up for me and thanks again!
DeleteHello Moria! It's funny how I now relate your name to American Horror Story since I think a character's name on the first season's name was "Moria," but pronounced differently! Anyway, I'm glad to see that you actually seem to have found something! Like I said, I probably just feel pressured because I don't want to disappoint anyone. Hopefully I get into something soon!
DeleteJust to chime in here, this is EXACTLY THE SORT OF DIALOGUE WE NEED ON THIS SITE. Keep it up!

Hello class, my name is Abigail Estrada. I am 21 years old and have lived in Bakersfield my whole life. I have not really traveled that far from Bakersfield. I would like to one day travel to London, Spain, and Germany. I believe the world has so much history and beautiful places to see. Over the winter break I ate a lot of food. I also baked; I love baking and during the break is usually the only time I get to bake. The best part of the winter break would be seeing all my relatives and just spending time with my family and friends. I am a senior at CSUB and I plan to graduate this coming spring with a B.A. in Liberal Studies. I am currently applying back to CSUB to get my teaching credential. I want to teach special education at an elementary school. I have had quite a bit of experience with children in the last couple of years here at CSUB. I have volunteered at Children's Art Institute for the summer and fall camps they have. Last quarter I was tutor through the State Farm Grant at CSUB. I worked elementary students, mostly grades third and fourth. I have been very fortunate to work with these programs. I have gain a lot of experience and working with children has only reassured me that I am going towards a career that I will truly enjoy.
ReplyDeleteHI Abigail, my name is Geraldine, where in Germany would you like to go?
DeleteHi Abigail!
DeleteI know Adriana already has asked you, but what did you bake? I can bake cake, cupcakes, the basic and also pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie is my favorite and it is so easy to bake. My boyfriend and his family compliment me on it so I feel like I've mastered it. If you have any great baking recipes I would love to get some from you. :) That's great you did all the volunteering, it really does look great on applications and helps us grow as people.
Hi Geraldine,
DeleteI would like to go to Berlin. Have you ever traveled?
Hi Cheyenne,
DeleteI bake cakes, cookies, and cupcakes too. Its always nice to get compliments on your baking, I think that's why I keep baking. My friends usually get a box of all the stuff a bake. Volunteering does look great on your application and I am grateful to have had such great opportunities to work with children. Do you volunteer?
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteHi Abigail. Early congratulations on graduating in the upcoming Spring quarter. It’s amazing to know how much experience you have gained with teaching throughout your years at CSUB. I too want to teach at an elementary level. I hope I too get the opportunities to learn from working with elementary students as you did. Best of wishes to you in your journey ahead!
DeleteHi Abigail!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you bake? I also like baking, the thing I bake the most are cupcakes. When I bake cupcakes, I bake around two dozens, and in between my three brothers and dad the cupcakes are gone that day! Did you always know you were going to pursue a career that involved working with children?
Hi Adriana,
DeleteI usually bake cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. My friends and family usually like it when I make cheesecake squares. I get a lot compliments on those. I know how fast all those baking goodies can go, my brothers and dad are always the ones to finish them too. I actually did not know that I was going to pursue a career with children. I have always liked children and my oldest brother has Down Syndrome, so I have grown up working with children. In high school I thought I wanted to major in business when I applied for college, but my senior year I worked with a Special Education class and enjoyed it. I got so much joy from working with the class and I had my own personal experience with children growing up that I decided to go into teaching.
Hello everyone, my name is Geraldine Achilefu. I am a human biology major. I originally wanted to do nursing but i changed my mind. Most people i meet in school are all nursing majors; just seems like a lot of people really want to become nurses, but no body ever talks about how difficult nursing school is.
ReplyDeleteGetting into nursing school is hard, but actually making it to the end of the program is the most difficult of it all. People think just once you're in the program, your all set, but that's far from it. I really do have the most out respect for nurses, because is not easy and their job requires paying attention to details. Okay, i think i have said enough about nursing. sorry guy.
So, my new goal in life is to become a physician assistant (PA) and work with kids. I have always love working with children. I have been babysitting children for what seems to be my whole entire life. I believe children are the most precious thing in life. They are so sweet and loving and so caring for people who are small. Of course, some children can drive a person crazy, but they are still precious none the less. I have a little god son who is five years old and turning six this year. He is the most cutest and sweetest little boy i know.
He loves batman. I remember one day when i asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up, he said, i want to be a superhero just like batman! I swear that is the cutest thing ever. I love kids so much and hopeful, one day God will bless me with one.
I, too, have the utmost respect for nurses. As I mentioned in a previous post, my Mother -in-Law is frequently in and out of the hospital, and I know first hand the importance of having a kind, compassionate nurse. I have a question for you, (and please don't take this the wrong way, I truly do not know). What is the difference between a nurse and a physician's assistant?
DeleteHello Everyone :)
ReplyDeleteMy name is Cheyenne Fontenot. I was born in San Diego but have lived here in Bakersfield for a very long time, much longer than preferred. My major is Criminal Justice and my minor is CAFS- Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies. I'm trying to pursue a career in Social Work. I am taking this class online because I am a terrible test taker due to anxiety, and this is only taught online. So here I am! Plus, I have a crazy schedule and online usually works with that. I have many favorite books, so I can't really list just one. My favorite author is Ellen Hopkins, her books are based on true stories and they are in poem format which makes them so easy to get through. My favorite foods are sushi, Italian, and Mexican. The farthest I've traveled from home was when I visited family in Wisconsin. I wish it would have been somewhere a little more interesting but at least Wisconsin is very pretty during the summer. It's more green there than California. Over winter break I mostly worked, but also baked many pumpkin pies, caught up on some of my favorite shows, relax, and celebrate my 22nd birthday. Unfortunately, I did not get to go visit my family in San Diego like I had wished.
Hey Cheyenne,
DeleteWhat made you want to pursue a career in Social Work?
Hi Cheyenne it's so nice to meet you :) I am also minoring in CAFS! However I am majoring in Psychology which is related to social work as well. I have been looking into Criminal Psychology as well but unfortunately I haven't looked into the Criminal Justice courses yet. I may continue my masters program in your birth town of San Diego and I hope that I am able to get in, because like you, I am a terrible test taker and I am hoping that won't slow me down. I wish you nothing but luck and hope you enjoy being 22 because time goes by fast!
DeleteHi Abigail!
DeleteAfter taking one of my criminal justice classes where discussed child and elder abuse, it just wrenched my heart. That's when I realized about Child Protective Services and just social work in general. I want to help people even if it is a difficult career. Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a will to help people. I would prefer to work in Child Protective Services, but I know I most likely won't get to choose so I'll just be happy to have a great career and be helping people. That career might be underpaid like everyone says, but honestly it doesn't matter to me. I want a career I won't hate doing every day of the rest of my life.
Hi Brittany,
DeleteIt's great to meet you as well. :) I think CAFS is a great minor. The classes aren't super stressful and are quite interesting. I feel it can relate to someone in many ways. Criminal Psychology was my original plan when I went in criminal justice classes, then later realized I wasn't really into psychology like I thought. A great course if you really enjoy psychology and have an interest in criminal justice is the theories course with Anthony Flores. He's one of my favorite professors in the department. The class is just all about the theories of why people commit crimes and etc. I think that is a great career path. You could totally get a job through corrections and make really decent money. Take me with you! I wish I could go to graduate school there. I'm applying here because I feel I have better chances and it's only two more years. I wish you the best of luck and you'll have to let me know if you get in! Thank you very much, I'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible since time just gets faster as we age.
Hello everyone, my name is Moria (like Mariah Carey) MoirĂ© (as in the effect or silk) Romero. I am a 35 years old, happily remarried, mother of two girls, Jacqueline 16 and Juliana 12. I was born, raised and currently reside in Bakersfield, more specifically on the east side of Bakersfield. I am a Sociology major that transferred from Bakersfield College and I am in my second quarter of my junior year at CSUB. I have officially been a college student for just over seventeen years, partly due to the unexpected arrival of my daughter but largely due to my indecisiveness and financial constraints. I am an only child that was severely spoiled and totally sheltered from the harsh realities otherwise known as “life”. Thankfully I now have an appreciation for single parents as I have experienced it firsthand what it is like to be mom, dad, breadwinner, cook, maid, chauffeur and tutor all rolled into one. This experience while greatly humbling and rewarding was short lived when I was reintroduced to someone I went to junior high school with and this is where the “happily remarried” part comes in. In September of 2010 I was in a horrible car accident while on the job. While going through a Workers Compensation case regarding my accident my husband suggested I return to school and I begrudgingly agreed since we live literally across the street from Bakersfield College. To my everlasting amazement I loved school and thrived while at Bakersfield College, earning my AS in Sociology and transferred to CSUB where I am now happily attending. I am taking this online course because I am deathly afraid of the GWAR test and hoped this would be less threatening.
ReplyDeleteWhat a story!
DeleteDeathly afraid of the GWAR test? Yes, I hope this class is less threatening!
Even though I am a very good student I still have a natural fear of the unknown, specifically the GWAR test. So far I am thoroughly enjoying this course and the added bonus of one less class to attend during the week is gaining my everlasting devotion.
Delete:)
DeleteHello class, my name is Brittany Calciano and I am majoring in Psychology at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB). I was born and raised in Bakersfield, so attending this college means I can be close to my family. Family is very important to me and I love being around children as well. Caring and being responsible for children has always come naturally for me even though I do not have children of my own. It may be due to the fact that my entire family has had a new baby every year. I am always involved with my niece and nephews as if they were my own and during winter break I was able to be a fulltime nanny for a very fun loving infant. Enjoying time with children is also the reason why I have decided to minor in CAFS or better known as child development. I previously attended Bakersfield College but it wasn’t nearly as helpful and constructive as CSUB has been. This course will allow me to satisfy the GWAR requirement so I may be able to focus on my psychology courses later on. Not only do I hope to fulfill this requirement, but I also hope to broaden my reading and writing skills. I have never the type of person who has read for fun, other than the occasional sappy love series. I do however enjoy watching TV shows and movies about the supernatural. I have always been interested in motion pictures and acting and have even been in a few plays for a couple of productions in Bakersfield. Acting was truly my dream job, but reality has set in since that dream. I have always been the type of person that enjoyed listening to others and helping them through challenges in life which is what led me to the decision to pursue a career in Psychology. I hope to succeed in this course, quarter, and school year so I may graduate and continue my journey in life.
ReplyDeleteDo you still act at all? You could eventually do some acting for fun, right? I think we give up on our joys sometimes--you shouldn't! I wonder if acting and psychology go together. What do you think?
DeleteHello class, my name is Camille Boles and I am majoring in Liberal Studies. I am currently in my final year at CSUB and will begin working on my teaching credential in the fall. I hope to be able to teach little ones, especially those around first or second grade. I also have a minor in History and am considering teaching History at the college level eventually. I have recently begun working as a substitute teacher and I am taking this class, as well as one other, online so that I can spend more days in the classroom. I am a transfer student from Fresno State, though I am originally from Bakersfield, and moved back here to be close to my family. I come from a relatively large family which seems to be growing steadily. I have four brothers who are all married and have babies. I have four nephews and one niece and I greatly enjoy spoiling them. I spent the majority of my Winter break doing just that. I loved being able to spend six weeks just focusing on myself and my family rather than constantly stressing about school work. In addition to this, I spent a lot of time reading and working on Christmas crafts. I crocheted blankets for all of the little ones as well as homemade crayons for the older two. It was nice having so much free time on my hands. I was also able to do one of my favorite things, baking. I love to bake cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and muffins. I find baking to be a calming experience. This is especially true when I am able to do holiday baking with my mom, it is such a wonderful tradition.
ReplyDeleteThere is so much more that I can say about myself, but I think I hit most of the important parts. I look forward to reading everyone else’s blog and getting to know more about all of you.
Hello Camille, what an accomplishment! I bet you are so happy to almost be done with school. Do you like being a substitute teacher? I also come from a large family and enjoy spending time with them. Your winter break sounded a lot like how mine went. Except, I can't crochet although I've always wanted to learn. I will have to try making homemade crayons with my siblings, that sounds like fun! In my free time I also enjoy baking so when reading your blog I was excited to see a fellow baker. Hope you have a great winter quarter.
DeleteHello everyone my name is Jordan Wills. I am 20 years old and currently a junior here at CSUB. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, Ca. I couldn’t imagine going to school somewhere else, I would get to homesick. Originally my major was nursing, but sophomore year I switched to a CAFS major. I got my CNA license at Preferred College of Nursing and I work with the elderly. I have a passion for both nursing and CAFS so changing majors was a hard decision. I am the oldest of ten siblings and have had plenty of practice with child development. So, I think CAFS is the perfect major for me. I have not yet decided exactly what my future career will be. I am undecided between being a teacher, social worker, or a probation officer. I have been engaged for two years now to my junior high sweetheart. We will be tying the knot on 12.13.14. Honestly I’m not much of a reader. My favorite book would have to be the bible, it is the only book I regularly read. I struggle with grammar, so I’m a little nervous to be taking an upper division English class. I As for food, I love Mexican food but my favorite place to eat is probably Olive Garden. I am taking this class online because my counselor recommended I take this class in place of another. I would love to be able to travel more. The farthest I have ever been away from Bakersfield is when I went to Texas to visit family. Over winter break I babysat my siblings most of the time, because they were also out of school. I also got everything ready for Christmas, spent time with family and relaxed. It was very nice. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a good New Year. I look forward to getting to know you all more and hope you guys have a great winter quarter.
ReplyDeleteHi Jordan. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You must be so excited! I am also a CAFS major and think you will enjoy it. The classes are really interesting and discuss parenting and family relations which will probably hit close to home with you since you're so close to your family. I'm jealous that you get to work with the elderly! My second career choice was working in geriatrics so I really admire what you do. I can't believe you're the oldest of ten! I only have two siblings (an older brother and younger half brother). I hope you have a great quarter and good luck with planning your wedding!
DeleteHello English 305 takers, my name is Richard Gomez. I am 21 year old criminal justice student. I was born and raised in Bakersfield California. Just as Jordan Wills who is above me, I could not possibly think of living some where else. I currently work the City of Bakersfield as a Sports Program Coordinator. After college, I plan on joining the Air Force as a Officer, serve my 4 years than make an effort to get a Masters in Public Administration. Talking about the air force, I just got back from watching the new movie, "Lone Survivor". Hands down best movie I have seen all year. My favorite book would have to be The Outsiders, I read it over winter break. The reason why I am taking this online class is because of the way my work schedule is set up. Even though, I missed the dead line for this blog post, I do believe it will help for future blogs. The farthest place I have ever traveled from Bakersfield is Chicago Illinois. My family and I flew there for a family wedding. My favorite food would have to be Posole, I could eat that every day. Well I look forward to this new online experience and blogging with my fellow class mates. Wish you guys the best this quarter.
ReplyDeleteHi Richard. I am also 21 and born/raised in Bakersfield but I would love to go to live outside of Bakersfield! I admire you for loving living in Bakersfield so much though; there are so many people that make negative comments about living here when in actuality it's not that bad at all. I would like to move somewhere with a cooler climate, I have an aversion to hot weather. Your job sounds really fun. I'm not into sports myself but I think a job as a sports program coordinator would be interesting. Lone Survivor looks intense but I'm glad to hear you liked it. I saw Her last week and it was weird and interesting but dragged on a bit. Good luck this quarter!
DeleteHi all. My name is Amanda and I am late in adding this class. I am a CAFS major with a special education minor. This is my fourth and semi-senior year at CSUB. I should be graduating next fall and returning in winter 2015 to start my masters and credentialing in special education. I am taking this online course out of convenience and necessity for graduation. I’m usually pretty busy with work but am trying to cut back so I can focus more on school. I work as a behavior intervention therapist for a company in town. I do in-home behavior therapy with students with Autism and various disabilities. I’ve been working with students with Autism for almost six years and am going to school to become a special education teacher. I honestly haven’t had time to read for pleasure in quite some time. I think the last book I read willingly was Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman; I remember really enjoying his books. My favorite food depends on my mood. Today I’m craving Thai food so drunken noodles and pineapple rice at Noodle Bar sounds quite appetizing. I’m a huge sweets person so I’m always in the mood for things like Yogurtland. The farthest I’ve ever traveled from home is Ireland; I went there during winter break in 2012. During this winter break, I worked and house/weenie (they have two wiener dogs)-sat for my brother and his wife. I also started watching Breaking Bad over winter break and spent time with my wiener dog Frank.
