WEEKLY REQUIRED WORK

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK TEN...READING, BLOGGING, WRITING

Hi there, good 305ers!
As this is the last week, and as we have a big project due this week, there will be no other required blogging.

If, however, you have a question about the project or simply want to brainstorm an idea regarding your project, feel free to ask questions on here.

The Tipping Point is a book that has applications all over the place, so if you have an idea and want to get some conformation on it, post it here--or email me.
Here are some examples that I have thought about in the past week:
>>>food culture(ever since the original Iron Chef, food has become an obsession in the U.S.);
>>>wine culture;
>>>sushi (seriously, there was a time when Bako had no sushi restaurants);
>>>barefoot running(even Nike now has minimalist shoes);
>>>mud races, color me rad races;
>>>cancer awareness walks;
>>>paper or plastic? ecological awareness;
>>>ipads in the classroom;
>>>common core in education;
>>>slavoj zizek(if you are a philosophy major, you  might know him);
>>>ted talks;
>>>digital data storage in hospitals;
>>>smart infusion patient care;
>>>robotic surgery;
>>>various ideas regarding globalization in business(read the World is Flat if you have not);
>>>neuroplasticity in kinesiology.

That was just a quick brainstorm. But for each of those, there are implications that can be gleaned by examining the idea in light of the Gladwell book.

Enjoy!

  1. I wanted to write my essay about music. Even though it is not a new type of music, just a variation, it still has all of the requirements explained in the book. Should I continue with this idea?

  2. I am going to write about social media and its effects such as Facebook and Twitter. Should we be using more than the book for reference?

  3. Rodrigo...yes, but even as you suggest here, it should be something more specific than just music. For example, when I was young a song came out called Rapper's Delight. Everyone at school knew every word. It was truly contagious. It helped to create a genre. As long as you are thinking specifics, you are onto a fine topic!

  4. Brittany, social media, facebook or twitter, is fine. The subject has been done quite often before, so try to find some unique spin on it. You only really need to book, but try to find some novel way of approaching the topic within the book. There are so many ideas in there--pick one and go with it!

  6. Professor, If I choose question no.2 for my essay, can I use a company's case in the past, analyse it and expose its tipping point phenomenon from the way they solved the crisis? For instance, from Tylenol Crisis in 1982, Johnson & Johnson successfully brought Tylenol back to the market in just 9 months after the crisis and became the first pharmaceutical company that introduced triple-seal tamper- resistant packaging. Can I use that case or you just want a general trend in No.2?

  7. Really? I had no idea about that case, but it seems like Tylenol "tipped." So I would say yes, it makes perfect sense to use that specific case.

  8. Thanks, Dr.S! Now, I found the Sriracha hot sauce story how it becomes so popular also interesting. I am using either Johnson & Johnson or Sriracha case for this assignment.

  9. Is the essay a maximum of three pages or are we encouraged to write more?

  10. Should we be citing and making a reference page? I quoted a mission statement from a site and of course I am including information from the book.
