WEEKLY REQUIRED WORK

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK SIX BLOG ENTRY

There is a story about Hemingway that goes like this. He is in a bar--he was often in a bar. Someone challenges him to write a story in a very unHemingway way. It could only contain six words. They bet a bottle of scotch, so for Hemingway, these are high stakes! He accepts. He pens this masterpiece: "For sale, baby shoes, never worn."
He wins the bets and establishes the six word memoir.
This week, your blog entry should have six words, your own six word memoir. The only requirement is this; it must only have six words. Then, later in the week, you can come back and comment on the six word memoirs of your classmates.
Also, you can do multiple ones, so have a go and then skip a space and do it again. I'll try one:

dreary sunday, rain clouds, only hope.

Here's another:

youth, writing limitless words, all red.

Have fun!

    1. Rodrigo when i read this, i just thought of a sad movie. Those kind of movies where someone must leave, and you don't want to say goodbye because that means you will never get to see that person again, so your left with the pain of seeing that person go without saying goodbye.

    2. Hi Rodrigo, pain will always be an emotion that will scar anyone.

    3. This definitely had me thinking of many sad scenarios. It reminded me of losing a dear friend of mine. His death was so quick and sudden it was unbelievable at first. This sentence is very deep.

    1. I definitely agree with you. The past is something we can't take back. There's no need to worry about something we can't change or have control over, but instead we should focus on what we can control. Embrace the day and grow from there.

    1. I really loved your second poem. It reminded that we can lose sight of what we truly want. I hope we always stay on the right path!

    2. Your second memoir reminded me of something I heard before. I head on a song that the closer we get to something, the tougher is to see it and is very true because we sometime tend to lose sight of the things we have close or that we love the most. And when we think we are in the right path is so easy to get lost again.

      Delete
    3. Thanks Abigail! It is so easy to get distracted or to lose focus. In order for us to stay on the right path, I believe we must always remember what our purpose is for wanting whatever it is that we want!

    5. Rodrigo, I agree with what you said. There was a time when I lost sight of something that was very close to me, and that I love very much, because I became far too comfortable with it. I started to do things out of habit and I eventually forgot my purpose in why I was doing everything in the first place. This led me to fall and to temporarily get lost. So I can totally understand that the closer we get to something, the tougher it is to see it and that when we think we are on the right path, we can easily get lost again.

    3. Abigail, your poem gives a great practical visual on how life is. A person has to go through unknown paths to discover who he/she is. Life changes as a person gains more from his/her experience. Eventually this leads to a future that is molded accordingly to our experiences and decisions. Good job on writing a great poem!

    1. Hi Nile! This was a very interesting one to read for me. For many, this might mean that they regret something they did, but for others it may be regretting something they didn't do. It brings up a very interesting question of what will you regret most: what you've done or what you didn't do? Or is it possible to have not regrets at all? Great post!

    1. "love to live, live to love" This message is one that everyone should live by. I strongly believe that no one should spend their lives looking at the negative and being sad. It is about making the best of every situation!

"Midterm tomorrow, stress of studying, success." I am sure we can all relate. It is stressful to study for all of these midterms while also trying to keep up with a daily routine and life such as work and family. This stress will definitely pay off some day and we shall all succeed.

"nursing major, don't give up, hope" I have hear that the nursing program is no joke! It is a great career to go into and I definitely wish you the best. Definitely do not give up, it may be stressful and hard at times but just keep your head in the game.

I really liked your poems. They were a bit dark but had so much depth for only being 6 words.

      Delete
    2. Yes, Amanda, those were dark. They all have such powerful imagery. I think the "scrubbing Buddha" was a great line that makes the reader say, oh, I really want to know what that means!
...oh brother, I just re-read them and realize what they all mean. Arina, good job. That is the purpose of poetry, to confuse and make the world clear, all at once. And I am glad you have been reading Tortilla Curtain :)

    3. Amanda, Dr. Schmoll, ..I actually didn't mean to create a poem, each line is an individual line, I am re-reading the Tortilla Curtain now (I finished it during winter break, now I almost forgot the details so I need to re-read to find those 10 sentences for the synthesis essay...:))....and at the same time practicing to create six words stories.. :) Yes.. it was dark.. It was so difficult to find a cheerful part in the story.
